Centerpoint nurses oust union

Kansas City Star, April 25, 2009 In a setback for local organized labor, Centerpoint Medical Center nurses in Independence removed their union as their bargaining representative. Centerpoint nurses decisively voted to oust Nurses United Local 5126, with 226 nurses choosing to remove the union and 78 voting to keep the bargaining unit. The National Labor Relations Board conducted the election Thursday and Friday. Fifty-two votes were challenged and not counted, and 24 employees chose not to vote. Independence hospital’s action could make way for other nurses’ union

Centerpoint Medical Center has settled some disputes with the Nurses United union, a move that could hasten the effort some nurses have taken to oust the bargaining unit.

Early this month, Centerpoint posted notices throughout the hospital that it will not prohibit employees from discussing union activities or distributing union literature at nurses’ stations. The Independence hospital also said it will not fail to bargain with Nurses United on weekend-duty issues involving some nurses.

About 370 Centerpoint nurses are represented by Nurses United Local 5126. They voted to join the bargaining group in November 2007.

A Jasper County jury has awarded two former nurses at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin verdicts of $116,000 and $45,000 in their lawsuit against the hospital.

The nurses alleged they were forced to quit their jobs after raising concerns about patient safety.

Registered nurses at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur can decide each year whether to opt out of union membership, under a new contract approved Friday by a vote of 528 to 127.

The option had been a major sticking point during negotiations between the hospital and the nurses, who are members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 655. The nurses went on strike Dec. 15.

Some nurses said Friday that they will be on the job next week. The hospital said it plans to bring striking nurses back to work over the next few weeks.

The union held two balloting sessions at Queeny Park in Ballwin.

Nurses showed little emotion Friday night as union President Jim Dougherty announced the ballot results. He said he was "reluctant" and "pained" by the vote. But, he said, "this gives us the opportunity to continue to fight and represent nurses at St. John's."

St. John's nurses walk out

Registered nurses took up picket signs in the predawn chill Wednesday, launching their second strike in just over three years against St. John's Mercy Medical Center.

Nurses walked out of the lobby alone or in small groups as they finished delivering written and oral briefings on patient status. Strikers and hospital managers said the transition went smoothly when the strike commenced at 5 AM.

Both the hospital and the union declared the day a success. Ed Finkelstein, a spokesman for United Food and Commercial Workers Local 655, said about 300 people were on hand to picket at the outset. The union will maintain pickets around the clock.

Hospital administrators said a full schedule of surgeries and procedures were on tap for the day, which started with between 700 and 800 patients in-house and 94 scheduled surgeries. Bill McShane, hospital spokesman, reported everything went off without a hitch.
