The new three-year agreement reverted back to the previous agreement in terms of work rules, pensions and health insurance, while accepting the hospitals’ wage proposal of a freeze in year one, followed by increases of 1 percent and 2 percent in years two and three, respectively. Ninety percent of the nurses who voted were in favor of the new contract. And 99 percent voted in favor of the pension agreement. Mary Beth Schulke spoke for many nurses when she said, "I think there is a mixture of relief and sadness." The sadness is over the failure of the union to get a deal on improved staffing. California is the one state that has set nurse to patient ratios. That came through a bill passed by their state legislature in 2004. The vote results, announced late Tuesday after daylong balloting at two area locations, approved three-year contracts that give the nurses much of what they wanted. The nurses’ pension plans stay untouched, and the hospitals in the end didn’t include language allowing them to “float” registered nurses to any unit at any hospital at any time. What the Minnesota Nurses Association didn’t get was what had publicly been the union’s most pressing demand: nurse-to-patient ratios in the contracts.
