Whitehorse hospital nurses, health-care staff sign new contract

The new contract includes a nine per cent wage increase over three years for about 150 nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, social workers, therapists and other health-care staff at the Whitehorse hospital. Whitehorse hospital, union, ask for conciliator in talks

Hospital management and negotiators with the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada have asked federal Labour Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn to appoint a conciliator for the talks, which broke off April 4. The nurses' previous collective agreement expired on January 31. The Ottawa-based union represents more than 100 nurses at the Yukon hospital. ... Whitehorse

Low morale among Whitehorse General nurses: union
Submitted by seachange on Wed, 2007-07-04 02:15.CBC News, May 22, 2007 A critical staffing shortage at the Whitehorse General Hospital has led to low morale and overworked nurses filing more grievances than usual, says the president of the nurses' union. Michèle Demers, president of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, said nurses are being shuffled between departments to fill gaps created by the staff shortage. "The morale is low. The number of grievances have increased," Demers said. "There appears to be some leave requests that are denied." Demers added that the hospital continues to hire nurses on a casual or on-call basis, as well as restricting vacation leave for its nurses this summer ... Low<
