Focus on the Future

Committee for Vision - Not Division, July 2010

MNA elections are fast approaching. By voting in this election, you will have an opportunity to focus on the future direction of MNA. In the future, MNA will either continue to move ahead and grow stronger as part of the exciting national movement of RNs that share our goals, or we will be left behind, divided within the state and isolated from nurses around the country.

We have a vision:

  • We believe that in tough economic times, with employers on the offensive, unity is more essential than ever.
  • We believe that when nurses are divided, only our employers benefit.
  • We believe that we are stronger in Massachusetts when we stand united, alongside 155,000 nurses from across the country.
  • We believe that true democracy requires an informed and engaged membership and a Board of Directors that includes nurses from diverse regions and facilities.

We believe that, together as MNA & National Nurses United, we can win:

  • Improved retiree health benefits/pensions
  • Safe patient handling/staffing ratios
  • A ban on mandatory OT
  • Safe patient handling to protect nurses from injuries
  • Union rights for unorganized nurses in Massachusetts and across the country

Committee for Democracy - Not Autocracy August 28, 2010

MNA elections are fast approaching. By voting in this election, you will have an opportunity to focus on the future direction of the MNA. In the future, the MNA will either move ahead as a democratic institution and grow stronger or it will be left a shell of its former self; an institution controlled by autocrats with their own personal agendas, with the membership denied their right to vote and a voice in their association, divided within the state between a controlling few and a voiceless, dues paying, majority. This is why we believe in and advocate for the following:

* We believe in a strong democratic union but understand that simply calling the MNA “democratic” does not just make it so.
* We believe that a strong union requires true democracy.
* We believe that true democracy requires an informed and engaged membership and a Board of Directors answerable to them.
* We believe that true democracy requires ALL members of the MNA the right to vote, not just those able to attend convention.
* We believe that true democracy requires open union publications and free speech for ALL members.
* We believe that true democracy requires Board transparency.
* We believe that true democracy requires the polling of the membership to determine their wishes and our unions’ direction.
* We believe that true democracy cannot allow for Board “Gag Rules.”
* We believe that true democracy cannot allow for Orwellian Board “Solidarity” Policies.
* We believe that true democracy cannot allow for salaried MNA employees to volunteer to aid in an internal political campaign.
* We believe that denying democracy to the membership is divisive and puts the association at risk.
* We believe that in tough economic times, with employers on the offensive, unity is more essential than ever.
* We believe that when nurses are divided, only management and autocrats benefit.
* We believe that unity cannot be demanded or extracted from the members by decree or through threats of discipline.
* We believe that we are stronger in Massachusetts when we stand truly united, at home and alongside nurses from across the country.

We believe that together as a democratic MNA we can win:

* Improved retiree health benefits/pensions
* Safe patient handling/staffing ratios
* A ban on mandatory OT
* Safe patient handling to protect nurses from injuries
* Organize the unorganized nurses in Massachusetts and across the country
* Workplace violence prevention legislation

Support union democracy by voting for the following nurses for the MNA Board of Directors:

* Barbara Norton, Vice President- Region 5

* Meredith Scannell, Director At-large, General-Region 4
* Mary Anne Dillon, Congress on Health and Safety-Region 5

How Cute

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But somehow I doubt you're trying to flatter the Committee for Vision Not Division. How cute! You got this in your inbox this morning. It was sent far and wide by "nom de guerre." Is that you, or Meredith Scannell, or Jim Moura? It really doesn't matter. You folks don't practice what you preach, so who cares? Democracy? Try expressing a dissenting opinion within the walls of your workplace. Transparency? Nobody there even knows who you are. Freedom of speech? Watch out or you'll be sent to HR to be investigated. I'm letting your parody stand, but I'm deleting the links to your campaign's propaganda apparatus. Remember, I'm not a liberal.
